Dr. Joseph Amaral

Industry Advisory Board Member

Joe is Vice President of Surgical Technologies in the Corporate Office of Science and Technology at Johnson & Johnson.  He is the former President and Chief Executive Officer of Rhode Island Hospital, the largest hospital in the state.  Before taking leadership of the hospital in 2000, he trained as a resident, practiced surgery, and eventually became Chief of Surgery for the hospital.  At the hospital he oversaw a $350 million capital renovation project, information services improvements, and stewarded the hospital from a $30 million loss in 2000 to a 4% profit in 2005.  An innovator in minimally invasive surgical techniques and technologies, he was the co-developer of the ultrasonically activated Harmonic Scalpel developed by Ultracision which was acquired by Johnson & Johnson.  He is a former director of Sontra Medical (NASDAQ: SONT), a director of Isis Biopolymer and has served on the advisory boards of Davol, US Surgical, Stryker Endoscopy, Hereous Laser, Axya, and J&J Ethicon Endo-Surgery.  Joe received a BS from Providence College and MD from Brown Medical School.

 

Jim Maritan

Jim is Vice President of Market Strategy and Analysis for CVS Caremark Corporation. As a Fortune 25 company, CVS is the #1 provider of prescriptions and related healthcare services in the United States, through its 7,300 CVS/pharmacy stores, 650 MinuteClinic retail clinics and its pharmacy benefit management, mail order and specialty pharmacy division, Caremark. Jim joined CVS in 2002 to lead its corporate strategy group, and more recently led CVS’ Medicare prescription drug plan business. Prior to CVS he was a senior manager in the Washington, DC office of the Boston Consulting Group, Inc. (BCG) and also served as Vice President, Strategic Planning for Staples, Inc. Jim earned an Electrical Engineering degree with highest honors from Queen’s University (Ontario, Canada) and a masters degree in management from Krannert Graduate School of Management at Purdue University, where he was awarded the distinction of Krannert Scholar.

 

Bill Wray

Industry Advisory Board Member

Bill is the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island.  Prior to Blue Cross & Blue Shield, he was the Vice Chairman and Chief Information Officer of Citizens Financial Group where he managed Citizens Services Group, the enterprise technology and operations arm of Citizens Bank, which includes some 3,500 employees. He joined Citizens Bank in 1993 and became Chief Information Officer in 2000. Prior to his banking assignments, Bill served as an Army officer and worked in commercial real estate investment. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, and received a master's degree in engineering from Stanford University.

Scott Menzel

Scott manages the Technology Team for Investments and Acquisitions at EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC), a Fortune 500 high-technology company whose principal segments comprise EMC information storage products, EMC Software Group products, EMC information storage and management services, and RSA Security products and services. While managing his technology strategy team for the past seven years, Scott had hands-on responsibility for 31 acquisitions totaling over $8 billion and 12 investments with over $57 million invested. Seven of the investments have reached IPO or have been acquired to date. Earlier in his career, Scott held a variety of roles at Apollo Computer, Honeywell, Data General, and Sequent Computer Systems before joining EMC in 1994. Scott graduated from Northeastern University with a BS in Computer Science and has since taken strategy and finance courses at Babson College through the Sustaining High Performance program.

 

John Puckett

John was previously the Chief Technology Officer at DuPont where he was responsible for evaluating and introducing new and emerging technologies and providing global guidance on standards, strategy, design and implementation of technology initiatives. He has been recognized and credited for pioneering open systems and named one of the "Premier 100 IT Leaders" by Computerworld. Network World identified him as one of the top visionaries in "information technology for enterprise networking".  John serves on a wide variety of boards in the public and private sector.

 

Jeremy Segal

Jeremy is Vice President of Corporate Development at Akamai Technologies, Inc., the leading global service provider for accelerating content and applications online. He joined Akamai in 2000, and during his tenure has been responsible for many aspects of corporate and business development including joint ventures, strategic partnership, technology licensing, mergers and acquisitions, strategic planning and international market expansion. Prior to joining Akamai, he worked at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in their mergers and acquisitions and corporate value consulting practices. Jeremy holds a Bachelor's degree in Government and Economics from Bowdoin College and an MBA from Cornell University's Johnson School.

Patrick Von Bargen

Industry Advisory Board Member

Patrick is a Director of Quinn Gillespie & Associates, a leading Washington D.C. public affairs firm.  Patrick is focused on providing strategic counsel to a wide variety of QGA's energy clients, primarily in the clean technology space, including solar, wind, recycling, and biomass.  Patrick joined QGA in 2008, after having served in major public policy roles over 17 years in Washington, including as Chief of Staff to Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and Managing Executive for Policy & Staff for Chairman William H. Donaldson (R-NY) at the Securities & Exchange Commission. He also headed the National Commission on Entrepreneurship and served as Vice President of the Council on Competitiveness, the only national organization whose membership comprises CEOs, university presidents, and labor leaders focused on American economic competitiveness issues. Patrick holds a B.A. in History with Honors in Humanities, graduating summa cum laude from Stanford University, a J.D. from Stanford Law School, and an MBA from the Yale School of Management. He is a member of the bar in the states of California and Colorado.

 

Rick Daniels

Rick is CEO of Advent Technologies North America (www.advent-energy.com), a breakthrough advanced materials energy technology company.  Rick recently participated as a Fellow in the New England Clean Energy Council Fellowship Program, where members are selected based on previous success in founding technology ventures, raising capital, and CEO experience.  Prior to this, Rick was the Founder of MultiLayer Coating Technologies, which he created by purchasing technology and coating assets from Polaroid Corporation.  Funded with private equity, the company successfully exited to Konarka Technologies.  Prior to this, Rick was VP of Strategy and Development for the post-bankrupt Polaroid Corporation, where he was responsible for acquisition analysis and alliance and partnering strategy. Rick was VP of Venture Development at Commonwealth Energy during the energy deregulation in Massachusetts. Rick began his career with a series of domestic and international general management, finance, marketing, intrapreneurial, and corporate development positions at Rohm and Haas Company, a Fortune 500 specialty chemical/advanced materials company. Rick holds a Bachelor in Engineering Science (Electrical) from Johns Hopkins University and an MBA from the Tuck School at Dartmouth.
